First, I apologize for the length of this post, but I am trying to provide some clarity to a discussion that can easily be confusing, I believe.
I've been running into issues with the Reply to All function in the R8.5.1 FP1 client (I haven't tested it in other versions so I don't know how this behavior exhibits itself there) where I will sometimes be added in the CC field and other times, I will not. A better, and more specific, description of the problem follows. A common configuration throughout these scenarios is:
I have set the Server Configuration document "RFC822 phrase handling" to "Use CN as phrase"
My internet address in the Location document: john.doe@domain2.com
My RFC822 address is: John Doe <john.doe@domain2.com>
Scenario 1 (baseline)
I receive an email from Jane Doe and I am the only one to whom Jane is addressing the email.
From Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
To Address: John Doe <john.doe@domain2.com>
When I use Reply to All With History, the following addresses are populated.
To Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
CC Address: -empty-
This is all well and good.
Scenario 2
I receive an email from Jane Doe and I am the only one to whom Jane is addressing the email.
From Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
To Address: John M Doe <john.doe@domain2.com>
When I use Reply to All With History, the following addresses are populated.
To Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
CC Address: John M Doe <john.doe@domain2.com>
Note that in this case, because the RFC822 address is different from what Domino would generate, the Notes client doesn't recognize it as being the same and adds me to the CC field.
Scenario 3
I receive an email from Jane Doe and I am the only one to whom Jane is addressing the email.
From Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
To Address: "John Doe" <john.doe@domain2.com>
When I use Reply to All With History, the following addresses are populated.
To Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
CC Address: "John Doe" <john.doe@domain2.com>
Note that again in this case, because the RFC822 address is different from what Domino would generate, the Notes client doesn't recognize it as being the same and adds me to the CC field. Even though the only difference is that my common name is in double quotes, I am a different person for the evaluation of the CC field.
Scenario 4
I receive an email from Jane Doe and Jane is now sending it to 2 other people.
From Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
To Address: John M Doe <john.doe@domain2.com>, Howard.Hughes@domain3.com
When I use Reply to All With History, the following addresses are populated.
To Address: jane.doe@domain1.com
CC Address: Howard.Hughes@domain3.com
So now, even though my RFC822 address doesn't match what Domino would generate for me, I am not included in the CC field and only Howard.Hughes@domain3.com is added there.
Miscellaneous
Since an external person can create whatever they want for me as an RFC822 address (for example, "MyYounger Brother <john.doe@domain2.com>") and it will be delivered, it is not feasible to add all potential combinations of RFC822 addresses to my Person document to deal with this. And, truthfully, I don't know if adding anything to the Person doc will help.
This just doesn't seem to be the way that the Notes client should be working, forcing users to delete themselves from a CC field of a reply. No, it isn't going to cause the end of the Free World, but it also isn't right. Has anyone else had an experience with this?
